SUMMARY:2021 International Open Access Week
DESCRIPTION:The 2021 International Open Access Week will be held from October 25-31. This year’s theme will be “It Matters How We Open Knowledge: Building Structural Equity.” \nThis year’s theme intentionally aligns with the recently released UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science\, of which Open Access is a crucial component. Circulated in draft form following discussion by representatives of UNESCO’s 193 member countries\, the Recommendation powerfully articulates and centers the importance of equity in pursuing a future for scholarship that is open by default. \nOpen Science should embrace a diversity of knowledge\, practices\, workflows\, languages\, research outputs and research topics that support the needs and epistemic pluralism of the scientific community as a whole\, diverse research communities and scholars\, as well as the wider public and knowledge holders beyond the traditional scientific community\, including Indigenous Peoples and local communities\, and social actors from different countries and regions\, as appropriate. (UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science\, Page 7) \nAs the first global standard-setting framework on Open Science\, the UNESCO Recommendation will provide an important guide for governments around the world as they move from aspiration to the implementation of open research practices. This year’s theme of “It Matters How We Open Knowledge: Building Structural Equity” highlights the Recommendation’s call for equitable participation for all producers and consumers of knowledge. \nOpen Science should play a significant role in ensuring equity among researchers from developed and developing countries\, enabling fair and reciprocal sharing of scientific inputs and outputs and equal access to scientific knowledge to both producers and consumers of knowledge regardless of location\, nationality\, race\, age\, gender\, income\, socio-economic circumstances\, career stage\, discipline\, language\, religion\, disability\, ethnicity or migratory status or any other grounds. (UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science\, Page 7) \nMore information soon…

SUMMARY:Open Science in HORIZON Europe
DESCRIPTION:Open science is a policy priority for the European Commission and the standard approach to academic research under the new Framework Programme Horizon Europe\, as it improves the quality\, efficiency and responsiveness of research. \nWhen researchers share knowledge and data as early as possible in the research process with all relevant actors it helps diffuse the latest knowledge. And when partners from across academia\, industry\, public authorities and citizen groups are invited to participate in the research and innovation process\, creativity and trust in science increases. \nWhat novelties can we find in Horizon Europe regarding Open Science? What new practices evaluators will look for in their evaluation? What rules and obligations are set in the new model agreement? \nAlea López\, from the Open Science unit of the European Commission\, will discuss these and other issues\, particularly relevant to all researchers and research managers aiming to submit and manage projects under Horizon Europe. \nSpeaker: Alea López de San Román – Policy Officer\, Unit Open Science\, Directorate General for Research and Innovation\, European Commission \nTarget audience: Open to the R&I community (Researchers\, Research managers\, Librarians\, etc.) \nRegistration needed. \nOrganizers: NOVA FCSH working group on Open Science

SUMMARY:Gender Equality Dialogues
DESCRIPTION:Gender Equality Dialogues: Gender Equality and healthcare\nDuring this month’s dialogue we will discuss the intersections of healthcare and gender equality. We are interested in unpacking the impact gender has on one’s standard and access to care. Our discussion will center around the questions: In what ways is the agency of women and gender diverse people compromised in the Portuguese healthcare system\, how is this similar or different to other countries and what is being done to bridge the equality gap? We will be hearing insights from student researchers who have worked with prompts provided to us by experts in the field. \n  \nThis event is a collaboration between NOVA SBE Pride Association Student Club\, Role to play\, and the Teresa e Alexandre Soares dos Santos Library at NOVA SBE. \n

SUMMARY:2021 International Open Access Week
DESCRIPTION:The Open Access Week 2022 will be held from October 24th to 30th this year centred on the topic “Open for Climate Justice”. \nThe climate crisis has occupied a fundamental space on our agendas\, bringing together an extensive community of experts looking for a solution to a problem that threatens the sustainability of our planet and our survival as a species. \nFollowing UN statements\, to speak of climate justice is to recognize that its impact “will not be borne equally or fairly\, between rich and poor\, women and men\, and older and younger generations. “ Open science is key to removing barriers and promoting greater knowledge sharing. Openness is fundamental to the development of policies and behaviour change that allow for an effective and balanced response to climate change issues. \nOver the next week researchers\, scientists and librarians from around the world are dedicated to promoting actions related to the open science movement. There are many events available\, with free access that only require advance registration. You can consult all events on the following page: https://www.openaccessweek.org/events

SUMMARY:Book "Invisible women" by Carolina Perez with Professor Daniela Schmitt
DESCRIPTION:On this first Diversity\, Equity & Inclusion Dialog @ Library we will join Professor Daniela Schimitt for a read of “Invisible women” by Carolina Perez. \n \nData is fundamental to the modern world. From economic development to health care to education and public policy\, we rely on numbers to allocate resources and make crucial decisions. But because so much data fails to take into account gender\, because it treats men as the default and women as atypical\, bias and discrimination are baked into our systems. And women pay tremendous costs for this insidious bias: in time\, in money\, and often with their lives. \nCelebrated feminist advocate Caroline Criado Perez investigates this shocking root cause of gender inequality in Invisible Women. Examining the home\, the workplace\, the public square\, the doctor’s office\, and more\, Criado Perez unearths a dangerous pattern in data and its consequences on women’s lives. Product designers use a “one-size-fits-all” approach to everything from pianos to cell phones to voice recognition software\, when in fact this approach is designed to fit men. Cities prioritize men’s needs when designing public transportation\, roads\, and even snow removal\, neglecting to consider women’s safety or unique responsibilities and travel patterns. And in medical research\, women have largely been excluded from studies and textbooks\, leaving them chronically misunderstood\, mistreated\, and misdiagnosed. \nBuilt on hundreds of studies in the United States\, in the United Kingdom\, and around the world\, and written with energy\, wit\, and sparkling intelligence\, this is a groundbreaking\, highly readable exposé that will change the way you look at the world.
